A 12-ounce can of cola holds about 39 grams of sugar — close to ten teaspoons. Spooned into your mouth dry, that much sugar would be genuinely hard to finish. Dissolved in cold carbonated water, it goes down in about a minute. And here is the part that matters: an hour later, you will eat the same lunch you were always going to eat.
Feeding studies keep landing on the same asymmetry. When people eat extra calories in solid form, appetite adjusts — imperfectly, but later meals shrink a little. When the same calories arrive as a beverage, the compensation is weak to nonexistent. The calories register on the scale but not in the appetite. Researchers have been describing liquid calories as effectively invisible to satiety for decades, and it remains one of the most consistent findings in nutrition research.
That invisibility is why drinks deserve separate accounting. A flavored latte at 8 a.m., juice with lunch, a sports drink at the gym, and two beers in the evening can add 700 or more calories to a day — an entire extra meal — without a single moment that felt like eating.
Why your appetite can't hear drinks
Satiety is assembled from a chain of signals, and liquids mute nearly every link in it. Chewing tells the brain that eating is happening. Solid food stretches the stomach and leaves it slowly, giving stretch receptors and gut hormones time to report fullness. Fiber slows the whole pipeline down further. A drink skips the chewing, empties from the stomach quickly, and — in the case of soda, juice, and most coffee drinks — carries no fiber at all.
Speed compounds the problem. Sugar in solution reaches the bloodstream faster than sugar locked inside a food's structure, which is why drinks punch above their weight on glycemic load. Fast in, fast out: the rise is sharp, the fall comes early, and the fall often reads as hunger. A sugary drink can leave you hungrier than no drink at all.
Sugar per typical pour
Nutrition labels quote servings. Nobody pours servings. A juice "serving" is 8 ounces; juice glasses run 12 to 16. A standard wine pour is 5 ounces; home pours are famously generous. Juice and smoothies are not a loophole
The sugar in orange juice is natural in origin, and that matters less than you'd hope. The World Health Organization counts the sugars in fruit juice as "free sugars" — the same category as the sugar in soda — and recommends limiting them, precisely because juicing strips out the structure that makes whole fruit self-limiting. It takes three or four oranges — sometimes more — to fill a 12-ounce glass. You would rarely eat four oranges in one sitting; you will drink them in two minutes. The distinction between added and natural sugar matters a great deal for whole foods, and much less once the food becomes a liquid.
Smoothies sit one step higher, because blending keeps the fiber even as it shreds it. But a shop-made 20-ounce smoothie routinely blends fruit, fruit juice, and sometimes sherbet or honey into 300 to 450 calories that drink like a snack and count like a meal. Its glycemic behavior lands closer to a soft drink than to the fruit bowl it resembles. A smoothie can earn its place — as a deliberate meal replacement with protein and vegetables in it, not as a beverage riding alongside lunch.
Coffee drinks and alcohol: calories in disguise
Black coffee is nutritionally close to water — a couple of calories, no sugar. The transformation happens in the additions. Syrup pumps, whole milk, whipped cream: a 16-ounce flavored latte typically lands between 250 and 300 calories with around 35 grams of sugar, which makes it a dessert wearing a coffee costume. As a daily habit, that one cup quietly contributes an extra meal's worth of calories every couple of days.
Alcohol is its own category of stealth. At 7 calories per gram, it sits closer in energy density to fat (9 per gram) than to carbohydrate (4), it triggers little to no satiety response, and it tends to loosen your grip on whatever food is nearby. The standard pours — a 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, a 1.5-ounce spirit — each run roughly 100 to 150 calories before any mixer arrives. Add sour mix, tonic, or cola and a single cocktail can pass 300. Three drinks at dinner can rival the dinner.
How Nutrication uses this
Nutrication grades beverages on a separate, stricter track. In the Nutri-Score component of the grade (worth up to 30 points), the first penalty threshold for a drink's energy and sugar is literally zero — any calories at all, and any sugar at all, each cost a penalty point immediately. Solid foods get far more headroom. The result: only plain water earns the beverage A, and a typical cola lands at the bottom of the scale.
The engine also refuses to extend its natural-sugar exemption to drinks. A whole apple's sugar is counted as zero penalty because it arrives inside an intact food. Juice and smoothies get no such mercy — the scoring code's stated reasoning is that liquid sugar, even blended whole fruit in a smoothie or fresh juice, spikes blood glucose without the whole-fruit matrix.
Glycemic load is scored on realistic pours: when a drink doesn't declare its own serving size, the engine assumes 330 ml for can-format drinks like soda, energy drinks, and iced tea, and a 240 ml glass for juice, milk, and smoothies. An earlier version scored drinks per 100 ml and understated a soda's glycemic load threefold. The glycemic-index estimates are blunt about the hierarchy: sodas and energy drinks at 70, sweetened tea and lemonade at 60, fruit juice and smoothies at 55, milk at 35 — and unsweetened water, tea, and coffee at 0, which earns them the full 15 glycemic-load points.
Two fairness rules keep the strictness honest. Protein always counts for beverages — up to 7 points, versus 5 for solids — because for milk and protein drinks the calories are the protein, and the drink energy thresholds already run hot; a protein shake is not destroyed by soda-calibrated math. And measures that genuinely don't apply, like fat quality for a fat-free soda, are excluded and the rest re-normalized rather than faked — the same honesty rule behind the whole grade.
Finally, the tracker gives drinks their own slot in your day, separate from meals and snacks. That is deliberate. Liquid calories are the ones memory drops first, and a dedicated slot means the latte and the juice get logged and counted instead of dissolving into "I basically just had a salad."
What to actually do
- Make water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea and coffee your default. They are the drinks the grading system treats best — and plain water is the only beverage that can earn its top mark.
- Eat the fruit, drink the water. If you love juice, pour a small glass and treat it as a treat, not as hydration.
- Check the pour, not the serving. Bottles and café cups routinely hold two label servings.
- Count alcohol as food. A few drinks can quietly match the calories of a meal.
- Milk and protein shakes are fine as planned calories — decide they are part of the day rather than sipping them incidentally.
- Scan and log drinks like anything else. The Drinks slot exists so they stop being invisible.
