A 150-calorie soda and 150 calories of cooked spinach hand your body the same amount of energy. That is the only thing they share. The soda is sugar dissolved in water. The spinach arrives with potassium, magnesium, iron, and vitamin C — raw materials your body actually runs on — packed inside the same energy budget. You would also need a mixing bowl of spinach to reach 150 calories, because leafy greens barely carry any energy at all.
Calorie counting cannot see this difference. A calorie is a unit of energy, nothing more; it says nothing about what rides along with it. Nutrient density is the idea that fixes the blind spot. Instead of asking how much energy a food contains, it asks how much nutrition you get per calorie. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals relative to their energy — vegetables, legumes, fish, dairy, nuts — are nutrient-dense. Foods that deliver energy and little else are the textbook empty calories.
Nutrication measures this directly. Nutrient density is one of the six frameworks behind every A–D grade, worth up to 20 points, and it is the only one whose entire job is to credit what a food gives you rather than flag what might hurt you. It is also the framework most likely to say something you rarely see in a nutrition app: "not rated." That refusal is deliberate, and it may be the most honest thing about the score.
Nutrition per calorie, not per package
The formal version of this idea comes from nutrient-profiling research; Nutrication's implementation follows the style of the Nutrient-Rich Foods Index, which ranks foods by beneficial nutrients relative to energy. The insight is that "healthy" is not a list of foods — it is a ratio. An egg and a tablespoon of butter are both fatty animal foods with similar calories, but the egg brings protein, choline, and iron along for the ride. Two granola bars with identical calorie counts can be different foods entirely once you ask what else is in there.
One caution before going further: nutrient-dense does not mean low-calorie. Almonds are among the most calorie-dense foods in the grocery store and among the most nutrient-dense, delivering magnesium, vitamin E, and fiber right alongside the energy. Density tells you what you get for your calories. It does not tell you the calories stopped counting.
The six micronutrients the engine looks at
Nutrication's engine tracks six micronutrients, each measured against the FDA Daily Values used on US nutrition labels. They earn their place for two practical reasons: they are among the vitamins and minerals most consistently reported in open food databases, and several of them — potassium and calcium in particular — are nutrients that many people under-consume.

Fiber and protein matter too, but the grade credits them elsewhere — inside the Nutri-Score framework — so the density score stays focused on micronutrients. If fiber is your question, start with the fiber guide.
How the 20 points are earned
The mechanics are simple enough to state in full. For each of the six nutrients, the engine converts the amount per 100 grams into a percentage of its Daily Value, then applies three filters:
- Below 1% DV, it doesn't count. A trace of iron in a cookie is not a reason to award points.
- Above 500% DV, it's thrown out entirely. Food databases are crowd-sourced, and a value that high is a telltale units mix-up — milligrams typed into a grams field. The engine treats it as a unit error and drops it rather than capping it.
- Each nutrient is capped at 50% DV. One mega-dose nutrient cannot max out the score by itself. Density should reflect breadth, not a single spike.
The surviving percentages are summed. A combined total of roughly 100% DV — say, four nutrients each contributing 25% — earns the full 20 points, and credit scales linearly below that. Spinach, lentils, sardines, and plain yogurt do well here. White bread and candy do not.
The fortification catch
There is one deliberate asymmetry. If a food is ultra-processed — NOVA group 4, the classification covered in our NOVA guide — its micronutrient credit is cut in half. The reasoning, straight from the engine's own notes: micronutrients in ultra-processed foods are usually synthetic fortification, and a vitamin-fortified sugary cereal shouldn't read as nutrient-dense as spinach.
This is a judgment call, and Nutrication makes it openly. Fortification is real nutrition — added iron in flour has done genuine public-health work — but a cereal that is mostly refined starch and sugar with a vitamin premix sprayed on is not the same food as the lentils it out-scores on paper. Halving the credit lets fortified foods earn something without letting the premix impersonate a whole food. When the discount fires, the score's explanation says so: the credit is halved because the nutrients are likely fortified.
Why missing data means "not rated"
Here is the problem every food-scoring system faces: micronutrient data is the least complete data there is. The crowd-sourced databases behind barcode scans reliably carry calories, fat, sugar, and salt — but potassium or magnesium are often simply absent. And absent is not zero. A jar of almond butter with no potassium value on file almost certainly contains potassium; nobody measured it.
So the engine draws a line. Unless at least two of the six nutrients show up meaningfully, and together they clear a combined 10% DV, nutrient density is not scored at all. The app tells you exactly that:

Consider the alternative designs. Score missing data as zero, and every sparsely documented whole food gets punished for paperwork it never filed — frozen spinach reads like candy. Score it as an invented average, and the number on screen is fiction. Exclusion is the only option that neither penalizes nor flatters. The same philosophy runs through the whole engine: Nutri-Score likewise refuses to grade a product whose saturated fat, sugar, and sodium are all missing, because zero-filling would hand out bogus "low sodium" credit. The density scorer even skips database entries that list a nutrient at zero or trace amounts, so a lazy entry cannot drag a good food down.
Exclusion is not a loophole, either. When too few frameworks survive, the overall grade gets capped — a grade resting on a single measure can never be better than a C, and two measures cap at B, or C for processed foods. A product cannot ride one clean data point to an A.
How Nutrication uses this
Nutrient density contributes up to 20 points of the grade's theoretical 135, alongside NOVA processing (35), Nutri-Score (30), ingredient flags (20), glycemic load (15), and fat quality (15). Whichever frameworks are available for a given food are summed and re-normalized to a 0–100 score, which maps to the letter grade — the full pipeline is laid out in how we grade.
Within its 20 points, the rules above apply exactly: each of the six micronutrients is scored as %DV per 100 grams, traces under 1% are ignored, implausible values over 500% are discarded as unit errors, each nutrient is capped at 50%, and a combined total near 100% DV earns full credit. Ultra-processed foods keep only half their total. A food scoring 14 or more out of 20 earns the "Nutrient-dense" highlight on its grade card; 7 to 13 reads as "some beneficial micronutrients"; below 7, the app says plainly that the food is low in the micronutrients it tracks. And when fewer than two nutrients are on file, the measure abstains and the grade is built from what remains.
What to actually do
- Ask the per-calorie question when comparing foods: not "how many calories," but "what do these calories bring with them?"
- Let produce, legumes, dairy, canned fish, nuts, and seeds carry your micronutrients — they score on density without a fortification asterisk.
- Be skeptical of big %DV claims on ultra-processed boxes. A vitamin premix is not spinach, and the engine prices it at half.
- Read "not rated" as missing data, not a hidden bad grade — try scanning a better-documented brand of the same food.
- Remember that density is a ratio, not a license: almonds earn their points and their calories at the same time.
